I was looking for the movie to start with our English Cineclub, with a couple of ideas in mind, when my wife suggested this movie. As always, she was right. At that precise moment I realised it was the perfect movie to start with. Not only it´s one of my very favourite movies ever, even the time of the year was perfect! We were not five as in the movie, but three weeks from Christmas.
I felt quite surprised because a lot of you haven´t seen already the movie, but, as I said, this is a lucky advantage for you. But you can not longer say that!
I love the movie for a lot of reasons, and it has the power of making me laugh or get moved every time I see it. English humor has always something different that I usually prefer, and for me all the movie is great. But if I must choose one funny moment, I do with Mr. Hugh Grant dancing in 10th Downing street, for example.
Talking about getting moved, I always found a little mote in my eyes when Emma Thompson discovers that the necklace is not for her. Only seeing this little scene, you can know what a great actress she is, only with this few minutes of interpretation.
There is a phrase I love too. When the stepfather, Liam Neeson, talks to his kid, and he is encouraging him to go for the girl, and the kid says: "Ok, Dad. Let´s do it. Let´s go get the shit kicked out of us by love". Brilliant! It´s a philosophy!
But, as I said, for me, the more shocking part of the movie is the beginning. The truth that is told then by the "voice over" is something that I actually haven´t realised. Sometimes is hard to wake up and reading the newspapers or watching the news, but I always try to see the world the way in the film is told.
Because is truth, trust me.
So, I hope that all of you really enjoyed the movie, and the Cineclub indeed. As other said: "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."
